寻血猎犬是什么犬？
The Bloodhound.
从字面上来看，应该指寻找鲜血（注1），或者更确切的是指寻找尚未干的鲜血（注2） 的狗。当然这个“血”字可不限于动物的血，任何可染血的物体都算，所以它也可以指“寻宝猎犬”、“寻车猎犬”(注3) 等等。但最常见的，也是最符合这种猎犬用途的，还是“寻血猎犬”。
在西方国家，这是非常受欢迎的家庭宠物之一（至少在美国是这样）。它不需要大量的运动来保持活跃的状态，因为它的“职业”本来就是一蹲就是好几个钟头。除了被用作狩猎之外，它们还常被用于搜寻遗弃的货物(如毒品和武器)，或失踪的人（尤其是儿童）。
虽然它们能够很好地适应城市生活，但也必须经常出门才能保持健康——这就是为什么它们这么热爱户外活动的原因所在了！另外需要提到的一点是，由于它们的嗅觉异常灵敏，所以在远离主人的情况下有可能自行寻找气味源并跟着嗅迹追踪。不过不用担心，因为它们并不会走远——最多也就是到附近逛逛罢了！
注1：“blood" can mean "entrails of slain animals"， but it is not limited to this sense. Note the use in "blood-curdling scream" and other expressions indicating horror at what one has seen or heard.
注2：“Blood” can also refer to spilt liquid generally， so “the blood of a fallen foe” would be acceptable.
注3：“The Bloodhound” is sometimes used generically as “any dog that hunts by scent”， although strictly speaking these words are capitalized when referring to specific breeds or types of dogs (cf. Retriever， Shepherd).
